I discovered this book when my son kept saying, "No, David" whenever we would drive home from daycare. I know there are no kids named David in his class, so I kept wondering, who is this David, and what is he doing to my kid?! Finally got to the bottom of it!My 2-year-old LOVES this book. I don't see the appeal, as it contains about 20 words total that are some variant of "No, David!" but my son loves it so much that it deserves 5 stars. The other day, I caught him "reading" the entire book to himself, and at the end, when he read, "Yes, David. I love you," he blew himself two kisses. So adorable. Pictures are very rich and well done.

This book is a family favorite as we have read it to each of the toddlers in our clan as each passed through this stage of life. The book has a message that rings true with little ones and reverberates the many times we say no and stop and all of the other synonyms we use for no. The message comes across well with humor and in the end, love. My little grandson who is still a guy of few words, when asked what does David's mother always say, he says no emphatically.
Book Paddy sent the book out promptly as promised, with protective package and in excellent condition.
This is such a great book - the writing is very elementary and the visuals are so engaging that this is an great book to read to a wide variety of ages. I discovered this book when participating in a volunteer reading program at a pediatric hospital and this was always the number one request. Now that I have kids of my own, this is always a pleaser.
If you haven't read it, the gist of the book is that the main character David is drawn in situations where he has crossed a behavioral boundary, and in response his mom reprimands him by saying, "no, David."
I highly recommend this book.
Be careful when purchasing the paperback copy. I ordered in Spanish. What a hoot! Will donate to the library. Haha. As was a Christmas present, ended up spending a lot more for a quick copy at Barnes and Nobles. The little boy does look mean with his teeth, but still the book is funny. Kids at school love David, and read book on Eon board.
My son (now 8) loved these books. I went to find our copy to lend to a friend who has a 3 year old daughter whose favorite (only?) word is, "NO." I can't find our copy so I bought this and, "David Gets in Trouble" for them. These books are really fun for toddlers because, let's face it, most of their day is filled up with "No" and "Stop" and "Come along" and "Put that down"..... This gives them the chance to be the one doing the scolding!!
When I read these books with my little one, he quickly memorized the dialogue and couldn't wait to turn the pages, so he could laugh at David's antics and tell him to stop. I would also use the opportunity to ask, "What is David DOING?!?!" so that he could vocalize the naughty behaviors (carrying too much stuff, teasing the cat, etc....) I read a couple of reviews that complained that these books set a bad example, but I think those people honestly missed a teaching moment or two. And I think the art is awesome, not the least bit scary!!
This book arrived with terrible water damage. The bottom half of the pages were stuck together and to pull them apart tore the page and messed up the pictures and words. The front cover is damaged too and you can see where the mold started to form. Next time I will buy straight from Prime.
“No, David!” is one of my favorite picture books; the illustrations are hilarious. The shenanigans of little David remind me so much of my son when he was young. The word “NO!” was used a lot in our house as well. Child rearing can be quite stressful, especially when mischievous children are involved. But despite all the stress they cause us, we DO love them. It helps to have a sense of humor about it, and David Shannon captures it perfectly!
My 3 y/o loves it and asks for it before every nap and bedtime. He likes to explain what David is doing wrong and/or how he may hurt himself. I do appreciate the author made a point to have the mother affectionate in the end, because little David just couldn't do anything right ) I don't get why my kid loves it so much, but I won't complain. I just want him to keep "reading" to us to build his vocabulary and help him with enunciation.
So we didn't use NO! too much and opted for a Stop! or his name or Hey! and an explanation. Our son has started yelling NO! in tantrums and is now taking to reprimanding our dog for petty offences, which is secretly cute. We're correcting it, and it happens very rarely now, and I am not blaming this book because he'd pick it up any little bad behavior anywhere at anytime and it's our job to correct it, but I just wanted to share that little tidbit if you are also dealing with a defiant little 3 year old struggling with his or her independence in this great, big world.
