Oh man, where do I start with this review? I guess let me start of with saying wow, Cassia you have outdone yourself with this book. It is one of the most emotional and intense books that I have read in a long time. The characters in this book are just so broken and vulnerable. This book is so simple, yet so complex at the same time. It grabs your heart and just makes you feel so much for these two characters and for their struggles. I want to say THANK YOU to Cassia Leo for writing this book, for all the work she put into creating such an amazing and beautifully written book! A book that left me completely drained emotionally, I definitely shed many tears while reading this book.

The two main characters in this story are Crush and Mikki. Seems as if fate has a way of bringing these two together when they most need it, even when neither of them realizes it. There is so much to this plot and story that I wish I could write about but I feel as if it would give he whole story away, and you really need to discover this story yourself. Mikki, she's a young, broken girl dealing with her bipolar disorder and just trying to survive day to day. Crush himself is trying to find a way to just live day to day and trying to cope with his own demons from his own past. Join these two in discovering just how much they have in common, and how much they have helped each other without realizing it. Their journey and their stories will melt your heart, bring tears to your eyes and also break your heart. It is such an emotional and intense ride these two young people have had to deal with.

Fate has a funny way of bringing people into your life, sometimes you don't even know that they have helped you, or you may not even know that you did something to help someone. A simple action can change a persons life. Cassia Leo shows us just how one simple action can set off a serious of events that mold us into the person that we turn out to be, or help mold another's life. So many emotions ran through my head while reading it. I definitely recommend this book to everyone. It may be a love story, but it is also much more than that. It's a story of fate helping two people out.

Mikki Gladstone has made the decision to end her life when she flies to LA for an “interview”. It won’t be her first suicide attempt, but she’s decided that she doesn’t want anyone to be able to find her, so she leaves a note and heads off to the airport. Unfortunately for her, the flight has been cancelled due to the weather, so when the mysterious stranger, Crush, asks her to go to lunch with him, she goes. Crush gets the feeling that he knows her from somewhere, but he can’t remember. When he does think he remembers, he can’t be sure unless he sees her chest to find out if she has a tattoo there.

Mikki refuses to go home, so she and Crush get a hotel suite together. When she falls in the bathroom and knocks herself out, Crush breaks the door down, and upon see her tattoo, knows she is who he’s been searching for for three years. They’re forced to have a lot of hard talks that are extremely eye-opening to one another. Over the course of a few days, Crush makes it his mission to give Mikki something to live for again. Can he accomplish his goal? Or is Mikki going to be forever haunted by her demons until she ends her life?

I love when books have hard topics such as depression, bipolar disorder, self harm, etc. Black Box deals with a handful of them, and I think Cassie did a wonderful job of handling it. I do wish Cassie had included a trigger warning. A few of the scenes kind of sneak up on you, and it can catch you off guard.

Regardless, this is an extremely raw and powerful book about overcoming mental illness and finding love in the midst of crippling pain. I highly recommend this book. It’s definitely one I will be reading again.

Intricate and well-written. The writing about sexual assault and crafting music (both piano and guitar) felt authentic. However, what was not so authentic was Crush's (aka William Slayer) uber-wealthy background. Perhaps because I don't hail from that world and don't personally know anyone who comes from the background of a 1 percenter, Crush's ease with wealth and privilege seemed too over the top.

Another critique I have is the seemingly too quick "I love yous". Although Cassia Leo did lay some groundwork to present how Crush and Mikki could fall in love with each other, their relationship still went from zero to sixty in warp speed.

My final critique is the complete implausibility of Mikki and Crush meeting each other in random ways not once, not twice, but three times!!! With billions of people on Earth, it was a little too convenient these two just happened to be there for each other twice over before they ever "met" each other, and then fate reuniting them one last time for all eternity. Sorry, this reader is not buying it.

Still, the world building is quite good, and as I previously stated, the prose is also quite good. It's just the overall plot I had a big problem with, and thus, "Black Box" loses some stars from this reader.

P.S. It's just a personal gripe, but I'm getting heartily sick of reading NA novels where the h is a virgin (or near enough to one) while the H is a complete man-whore. Authors, it's about balance. Too many NA novels lean too heavily in the virgin/manwhore direction that I am thisclose to cutting this genre out of my reading cycle.
